About

I named this blog “White Lotus, White Russian” back in February 2008. Back then, I was cocktail waitressing, working 60 hours a week and trying not to completely lose my mind. The tried & true remedy was a little Buddhist meditation mixed with a little alcohol. (Sometimes a lot of alcohol! But never actually White Russians. I’m more of a beer girl. If I were to rename this blog now under the same theme, I’d call it The Dalai Lager.) Needless to say, the dharma & vodka cocktail was a little contradictory but entirely effective. I thought I’d spend most of my time writing about how Buddhist philsophy helped me not kill my bar customers, but what I quickly learned was that spending your free time writing about work was not that much more fun than actually working.

Now I write about First World Problems like how it’s hard to be 25 in the middle of an economic recession when you have no idea What You Want To Do With Your Life. I’m just trying to be a little bit better (at everything) one day at a time, so this blog is dedicated to things that make me happier and smarter, and will probably make you happier and smarter too.

About me: I live in Portland, Oregon, with my boyfriend. I grew up in Wisconsin, and yes, I am unabashed about my love for cheese and beer. I like Portland’s beers, too, but they go a little heavy on the IPAs for my tastes. I read a lot of books. I run less than I ought to. I’m a big fan of movies made between 1930 and 1965. I make good cupcakes.
